Yesterday, after spending the first half of the day working in my daughter's classroom, I decided to squeeze in my 20-mile training run that I missed doing on Saturday. It's important to do an extra long run about 3 weeks out from a marathon. It not only prepares you mentally & physically for the full 26.2 mile marathon, but you find out where your weaknesses are (blisters, muscle problems, injuries) so you can hopefully work out the kinks before race day. I chose kind of a hilly course from Santee, up to and around Grossmont College to Lake Murray, around the Lake, then down Baltimore & Jackson Drives (both hilly streets, before making my way over to Mission Gorge Road to the San Diego Brewing Company - my carrot at the end of the stick. It's nice to have something to look forward to at the end of a long run. A large ice-cold Old Town Nut Brown did the trick (I guess I lived up to my run4beer email address). And my 20-miler actually turned into 21 miles!
